So then, it is not of the one who wills, nor of the one who runs, but of God who shows mercy.

For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”*

On the contrary, O man, who are you, who replies against God? Will the thing formed say to the One who formed it, “Why did you make me in this way”?

So then, He* has mercy on whom He wills, and He hardens whom He wills.

Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honour, and another for dishonour?
