But set apart Christ* as Lord in your hearts, always ready to give a defence to anyone who asks you for an account of the hope that is in you—yet with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience—so that in the thing in which you are spoken against, those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are inclined to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who engage in evil.”*

Let not your adornment be external—braiding of hair and putting on of gold jewelry, or wearing of garments, but the hidden man of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is extremely valuable in the sight of God.

For, “The one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his* tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. And he must turn away from evil and engage in good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

And finally, all of you be of one mind, sympathetic, loving the brothers, compassionate, humble. Do not return evil in response to evil, nor insult in response to insult; but on the contrary, bless, because to this purpose, you were called, so that you may inherit a blessing.

And who is the one who will harm you if you become zealous for what is good?

And he must turn away from evil and engage in good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if it aligns with the will of God,* than for doing evil.
