May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be praised! In his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope because Jesus Christ rose from the dead. God has given us an inheritance that can never be destroyed, spoil, or fade away. It’s kept in heaven for us.

You rejoice greatly because of all this, even though for a little while you may have had to suffer sadness in all kinds of troubles. These have come to show that your faith is genuine. This will bring praise, honor, and glory to God when Jesus Christ returns. Your faith is worth even more than gold, because gold can be destroyed even after fire has made it pure.

God, who chose you, is holy. So you should be holy in all that you do. It is written, “Be holy, because I am holy.”

As obedient children, don’t give in to the wrong desires you had when you didn’t know any better.

So make sure your minds stay alert and completely sober. Put your hope in the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ returns.

It is written, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers in the field. The grass dries up and the flowers fall to the ground, but the word of the Lord lasts forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
