In die land Us was daar 'n man met die naam Job. Hy was vroom en opreg en het God gedien en die kwaad vermy. Hy het sewe seuns en drie dogters gehad en was ook die eienaar van sewe duisend stuks kleinvee, drie duisend kamele, vyf honderd paar trekosse, vyf honderd donkies en baie slawe. Onder die mense in die ooste was hy die belangrikste man. Sy seuns het om die beurt partytjies gehou in mekaar se huise. By sulke geleenthede het hulle dan hulle drie susters genooi om saam met hulle fees te vier. Ná so 'n reeks partytjies het Job dan sy seuns en dogters beveel om hulle vir die bring van offers te reinig, en vroeg die môre het hy vir hulle almal 'n brandoffer gebring, “want,” het Job gesê: “miskien het my kinders gesondig en God in hulle gedagtes gevloek.” Job het dit elke keer gedoen.
