Kort daarna het Jesus een aand teen ’n berg opgeklim om te gaan bid. Hy het die hele nag in gebed tot God deurgebring. Die volgende dag het Jesus sy volgelinge na Hom toe geroep. Hy het toe twaalf van hulle uitgekies. Hierdie twaalf mans het Jesus sy apostels genoem, sy spesiale verteenwoordigers. Hulle name is: Simon (Jesus het hom Petrus genoem), Andreas, Petrus se broer, Jakobus, Johannes, Filippus, Bartolomeus, Matteus, Tomas, Jakobus, die seun van Alfeus, Simon (die mense het hom “ywerige Simon” genoem), Judas, die seun van Jakobus, en Judas Iskariot (hy het Jesus later verraai). Toe Jesus saam met hulle van die berg af kom, het Hy daar onder op die oop vlakte gaan staan. Baie van sy volgelinge en ’n hele klomp ander mense het daar na Hom toe gestroom. Van oor die hele Judea en Jerusalem, selfs van die kusgebied van Tirus en Sidon af, het mense in ’n groot massa na Jesus toe gekom. Hulle wou Hom hoor preek en ook van hulle siektes genees word. Jesus het dit toe gedoen. Mense wat deur bose geeste beset is, is deur Hom bevry.
