Toe die Kindjie agt dae oud was, die dag waarop alle Joodse seuntjies besny is, het Hy sy Naam gekry. Hy is Jesus genoem, soos die engel voor sy geboorte al vir Maria gesê het. Toe Maria se reinigingstyd van 40 dae verby was (soos die wet van Moses voorgeskryf het vir vroue wat geboorte gegee het), het sy en Josef vir Jesus Jerusalem toe gevat. Daar het hulle Hom aan God gaan toewy soos die wet dit vereis. In die wet van die Here staan daar immers: “Elke seun wat eerste in ’n huisgesin gebore word, moet aan die Here toegewy word. Hy moet eenkant gesit word vir die Here se diens.” Daar by die tempel het hulle ook die voorgeskrewe offer gebring om vroue weer rein te maak nadat hulle geboorte geskenk het. Volgens die wet van die Here kon arm mense twee tortelduiwe of twee jong duiwe aan die Here offer. Dit het hulle dan ook gedoen.
