Israel het 'n lang tyd nie die ware God gedien nie. Hulle het nie 'n priester gehad wat vir hulle kon leer nie en hulle het nie die wette van God geken nie. Maar wanneer dit sleg gegaan het met hulle, dan het hulle teruggekom na die God van Israel en dan wou hulle Hom dien, en Hy was tevrede. In daardie tyd kon 'n mens nie veilig rondgaan in die land nie, want in al die lande was daar probleme. Volke en stede het mekaar aangeval, want God het hulle bang gemaak en Hy het hulle laat swaarkry.
