It’s easy to get stuck on ‘richness’, trying to justify ourselves or to determine whether we are rich or not. To me it feels like this passage touches on investment, specifically eternal investment.

David says in Psalm 90:12, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Why would we want to number our days? Because our lives on earth are temporary! But we have the hope of eternal life, which is true wisdom:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

I think the point James is trying to make here, ties in with Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

The way we spend our time and money says a lot about what and who we value.

'But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ' Matthew 6:33

When Jesus is King of your life, He will determine how you spend your time and money. Your reward is eternal life!

What does the way you spend your time and money say about what or who you value?
