"If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all!" While it makes sense on the surface, it can aim way too low for someone who wants to follow Jesus. We're not just called to be "nice" or avoid harsh conflict, we are actually called to something deeper — we are called to be kind.

In fact, Paul says kindness is something we don't do when we "feel" like it. Kindness is something we consciously "put on." He reminds us in the book of Colossians that kindness is an intentional act. So sure, we can settle with being "nice," but why settle? Why not change somebody's world by being intentionally kind? It starts with compassion, but the only way we're able to act in kindness is by choosing to step outside what we're most comfortable doing.

Think about the kind of people you may typically avoid or don't pay too much attention to. How can you "put on kindness" and treat them with compassion this week?

On the Flip Side

Jesus wasn’t exactly known for telling people what they wanted to hear. Jesus didn’t give feel-good sermons. He flipped people’s ideas about God, the world, and themselves upside down — usually in uncomfortable ways. In this 20-day devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we'll compare how Jesus challenged the religious leaders and what God says in the Old Testament on what’s wrong or right, good or bad, and just or unjust.
