1At that time Herod the tetrarch hear’t o’ the fame o’ Jesus,
2An’ said until his servan’s, This is John the Baptist; he is risen frae the dead, an’ therefore michty warks do shaw furth themsels in him.
3For Herod had laid haud o’ John, an’ bund him, an’ putten him in prison, for Herodias’ sak’, his brither Philip’s wife.
4For John said until him, It isna lawfu’ for thee to hae her.
5An’ whan he wad hae putten him til death, he fear’t the folk, because they haud him as a prophet.
6But whan Herod’s birthday was keepet, the dochter o’ Herodias dancet afore them, an’ pleaset Herod.
7Whareupon he promiset, wi’ an aith, to gie her whatsaever she wad ask.
8An’ she, bein’ aforehan’ instruckit o’ her mither, said, Gie me here John Baptist’s head in an aschet.
9An’ the king was sorry; natheless, for the aith’s sak’, an’ thae wha sat at meat wi’ him, he commaundet it to be gien her.
10An’ he sendet, an’ cut aff John’s head in the prison.
11An’ his head was broucht in an aschet, an’ gien til the damsel; an’ she broucht it til her mither.
12An’ his disciples cam’, an’ teuk up the body, an’ buriet it, an’ gaed an’ tauld Jesus.
13Whan Jesus hear’t o’ it, he gaed awa frae there by ship intil a muirland place, by himsel; an’ whan the folk hear’t thereo’, they followet him on fit out o’ the touns.
14An’ Jesus gaed furth, an’ saw a great thrang, an’ was movet wi’ pity toward them, an’ he healet thae wha were ill.
15An’ whan it was the gloamin’ his disciples cam’ til him, sayin’, This is a muirland place, an’ the time is now gane by; sen’ the thrang awa, that they may gae intil the clachans, an’ coff themsels victuals.
16But Jesus said until them, They needna gang awa: gie ye them to eat.
17An’ they say until him, We hae here but five laives an’ twa fishes.
18He said, Bring them here til me.
19An’ he commaundet the thrang to sit doun on the gerse, an’ teuk the five laives an’ the twa fishes, an’ leukin’ up til heaven, he blesset, an’ brak, an’ gied the laives til his disciples, an’ the disciples til the thrang.
20An’ they did a’ eat, an’ were satisfiet: an’ they teuk up o’ the orra bits whilk were left twal creels‐fu’.
21An’ they that had eaten were about five thousan’ men, forbye women an’ bairns.
22An’ straughtway Jesus gar’t his disciples get intil a ship, an’ gae afore him until the tither side, while he sendet the thrang awa.
23An’ whan he had sendet the thrang awa, he gaed up intil a mountain by himsel to pray: and whan the gloamin’ was come he was there alane.
24But the ship was now in the middle o’ the sea, tosset wi’ waves; for the win’ was contrair.
25An’ in the fourt’ watch o’ the nicht Jesus gaed until them, gangin’ on the sea.
26An’ whan the disciples saw him gangin’ on the sea, they were fleyed, sayin’, It is a wraith; an’ they screighet out for fear.
27But straughtway Jesus spak’ until them, sayin’, Be o’ guid cheer; it is me; binna fleyed.
28An’ Peter answer’t him, an’ said, Lord, gin it be thou, bid me come until thee on the water.
29An’ he said, Come. An’ whan Peter was come doun out o’ the ship he gaed on the water to gang til Jesus.
30But whan he saw the win’ gousty, he was afear’t, an’, beginnin’ to sink, he criet, sayin’, Lord, saufe me.
31An’ at ance Jesus raught furth his han’, an’ teuk haud o’ him, an’ said until him, O thou o’ little faith, wharefore didst thou doubt?
32An’ whan they were come intil the ship, the win’ ceaset.
33Syne they wha were in the ship cam’ an’ worshippet him, sayin’, Verament thou art the Son o’ God.
34An’ whan they were gane owre, they cam’ until the lan’ o’ Gennesaret.
35An’ whan the men o’ that place had kennin’ o’ him, they sendet out intil a’ that kintra roun’ about, an’ broucht until him a’ that were ailin’;
36An’ besoucht him that they micht only touch the hem o’ his garment; an’ as mony as touchet were made perfitely hale.
