Vid nionde timmen ropade Jesus med hög röst: » Eli, Eli, lema sabachtani? « (vilket betyder: Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergivit mig?). Några som stod där hörde det och sade: »Han ropar på Elia.« En av dem sprang genast bort och tog en svamp, fyllde den med surt vin och satte den på en käpp för att ge honom att dricka. Då sade de andra: »Låt oss se om Elia kommer och hjälper honom.« Men Jesus ropade än en gång med hög röst och gav upp andan.
