V Starom Zákone uzavrel Boh so svojím ľudom veľa zmlúv. Uzavrel zmluvu s Noachom, s Abrahámom, s izraelským národom či s Dávidom. Aj keď Boh dal svojmu ľudu krásne sľuby, jeho ľud sa od Neho odvrátil. A práve preto Boh prisľúbil, že dá svojmu ľudu novú zmluvu. Kristus je naplnením všetkých Božích zmlúv.
