Ten Commandments of Marriage: A 10-Day Devotional

DAY 3 OF 10

Thou Shalt Talk

Words shape the climate of a home. Talking well is the intentional use of speech to clarify, encourage, and align rather than to wound.

James’ call - be quick to listen, slow to speak -reminds couples to choose timing and tone. Communicating well means saying hard things kindly and good things often. Use “I” statements to own feelings and reduce blame: “I felt hurt when…” opens conversation; “You always…” closes it down.

Timing and environment matter.

Important conversations need presence - no phones, no rushing, no public comparison. Schedule moments for talk so crucial issues aren’t aired at bedtimes or in the heat of frustration. Talk should include spiritual topics: Scripture discoveries, prayer requests, and shared mission. This keeps decisions and emotions tethered to God’s purposes.

Transparency builds trust when handled with humility: share finances, temptations, and burdens honestly in ways that invite help rather than shame.

When conflict escalates, slow the tempo - pause, pray, and return without weaponized words. Gentle speech repairs faster than proud silence.

Practice brief daily check-ins: a single meaningful question and an honest answer. Over time, these micro-conversations become anchors in the daily drift.

Application

Are your words inviting connection or stiffling it? Are you practicing transparency and vulnerability? Tonight, initiate one intentional conversation: a hope, a challenge, or a simple gratitude list. Practice listening as much as speaking.

Prayer

Lord, give us words that heal. Help us speak truth in love and create space for honest conversation.
