Ten Commandments of Marriage: A 10-Day Devotionalਨਮੂਨਾ

Thou Shalt Listen
Listening is love made visible.
When you truly listen, you communicate value, safety, and solidarity. Listening requires presence - eye contact, no multitasking, and the humility to hold your own agenda loosely. Often, your spouse needs empathy before advice. Listen reflectively and summarize what you heard. This defuses conflict and dispels assumptions.
Nonverbal cues matter.
Tone, posture, silence, and tempo often reveal more than words. Notice withdrawal, fatigue, subtle changes, and ask gentle questions. Resist the urge to fix instantly; sometimes the healing act is to sit with another’s pain and name it. If you feel defensive, ask for a brief pause, then return with a posture of openness.
Regular listening rituals, like short nightly check-ins, weekly heart-to-heart times, or a monthly “state of our marriage” review, create predictable safety for sharing joys and worries. These rhythms prevent resentments from quietly calcifying.
Listening also protects against emotional infidelity.
When your partner’s inner life is heard at home, fewer outside relationships will fill the vacuum. Listening keeps intimacy intact and builds the trust that undergirds every other command.
Application
