Ten Commandments of Marriage: A 10-Day Devotional

DAY 1 OF 10

Thou Shalt Love

Love is the daily commitment that shapes every choice you make as a spouse. Paul’s portrait in 1 Corinthians 13 names concrete habits: patience, kindness, humility, and perseverance.

In marriage, love is not a mood that arrives and leaves; it is a settled posture that prioritizes your partner’s good even when feelings lag. Jesus’ command, love one another, frames marriage as a calling, not a convenience.

Practically, love shows up in small repeated acts: the five extra minutes of listening, the apology spoken before pride, the consistent habit of saying “thank you.” These micro-decisions compound into a climate of safety and belonging.

Love also refuses entitlement; it reframes what you deserve into what you give. When conflict arrives, love chooses restoration over winning. When fatigue crowds the week, love sacrifices convenience to create a connection.

If your capacity to love feels depleted, start small. Receive God’s love first. Let His affection for you refill your reservoir. Then do one loving thing intentionally: speak a truthful compliment, take one chore off their plate, or schedule a quiet moment together.

Over time, these deliberate choices rebuild affection and trust. Love multiplied in action becomes the glue that binds ordinary days into a faithful, resilient marriage.

Application

Has your spouse sensed your love today? Consider doing one loving act today. You could, for instance, listen five minutes longer, write a short note, or take a chore off their list.

Prayer

Lord, fill our hearts with Your love. Teach us to choose our spouse’s good each day and to act with patience and kindness.
