Ten Commandments of Marriage: A 10-Day Devotional

DAY 2 OF 10

Thou Shalt Protect and Defend

Protection in marriage goes beyond physical safety; it means guarding dignity, emotional well-being, reputation, and spiritual health.

A protective spouse stands between their partner and anything that undermines intimacy: gossip, shaming words, unhealthy friendships, or media that fuel temptation. Protection is active when you remove stumbling blocks, establish wise boundaries, and speak life when others slander.

Emotional protection matters as much as practical safeguards.

When your spouse shares vulnerability, let your first response be presence and grace, not critique or public exposure. Protecting your partner’s privacy builds trust. Defend them before others. Refusing to amplify their failures binds your relationship in loyalty.

Protection requires wisdom and courage to set limits.

Consciously decide boundaries for social media, late-night conversations, or one-on-one relationships that could open the door to emotional infidelity. If your partner tramples on your dignity and threatens your well-being, you need protection. You may seek help from a professional counselor or your spiritual leader.

Financial stewardship, predictable rhythms, and accountable friendships are also protective structures. Protection isn’t controlling; it’s refusing to allow harmful patterns to erode the covenant.

When both spouses adopt a protective posture, the home becomes a sanctuary for growth, confession, and restoration. Protecting each other means you choose to honor the covenant in public and private.

Application

Do you have structures that intentionally buffer your marriage?

Identify one boundary or habit that would better protect your marriage (digital, social, or temporal) and agree on a first practical step together.

Prayer

Father, give us wisdom to protect what You have joined. Help us remove stumbling blocks and defend each other with grace.
