UNDERSTANDING YOUR NEED FOR REFORMATION

“Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.” Revelation 3:19 ESV

Reformation is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the state of being reformed,” or in other words, “changed for the better.” A trap you can fall into with connecting with God through Reformation is trying to change things in your strength to make things better. This is behavior modification at its core, which doesn’t get to the heart of the issue. When you experience true reformation, your heart is moved to change because you love God and desire to please Him. True Reformation involves discipline. You must not equate childhood memories of chastisement from a parent, teacher, or family member with the loving correction from your Heavenly Father.

Reformation, simply put, is making wrong things right in God's sight. The standard for reformation is God’s Word. Anything in your life that does not line up with the Word of God is subject to reformation! Revelation 3:19 teaches us to be zealous to receive reproof and discipline. Are you zealous to receive discipline that will result in your obedience? Are you zealous to repent? The Greek word used for repentance is metanoeo, which means “to change one’s mind for the better” or “think differently” (Thayer's Greek Lexicon/Strong’s definition). Reformation brings repentance. Romans 2:4 says, “Or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”

Reformation is a sign of God’s mercy and love for you. Invite the Holy Spirit to teach you His ways each day as you seek His reformation!

PRAYER

Lord, I ask for you to reform any crooked ways within me. I seek your heart and mind in all things. I pray less of me, more of you. I want to be zealous for your discipline. Show me what pleases you. Give me a teachable heart of repentance. I want to be set apart for You, for Your glory. I love you. Amen.

APPLICATION

• Read Hebrews 12:5-6 and ask the Lord if there is anything in your life that does not line up with His Word.
• Spend some time repenting to the Lord and receive His forgiveness.
