THE POWER OF PRAYER
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b (NIV)
In Joshua 10, we see an extraordinary moment when Joshua prayed, asking God to stop the sun and moon so that Israel could finish their battle against the Amorites. This was no ordinary request—it was a prayer of faith, rooted in a deep trust in God’s power and faithfulness. Joshua knew that without God’s intervention, they would not win. But because of his relationship with God, he knew that God could—and would—move on his behalf.
The key to Joshua’s prayer wasn’t just the boldness of his request but the trust he had in his relationship with God. He knew that God would listen to His people and respond. Joshua’s faith wasn’t based on what he could see in the natural world but on the confidence that God, who had been faithful before, would act again. He believed that God hears and moves according to His will.
James 5:16 reminds us that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. This power doesn’t come from the person praying, but from the relationship they have with God. When we pray, we are not just speaking into the air. We are communicating with a God who listens, cares, and is always willing to act on behalf of those who trust in Him. The power of prayer is found in the relationship we have with God—a relationship built on trust that He hears and moves in response to our needs.
Joshua’s prayer shows us what it looks like to trust God fully, even in the most impossible circumstances. It’s not about how eloquent we are or the size of our request, but about the confidence we have in God’s ability and willingness to act.
CHALLENGE:
This week, shift your focus in prayer from the need for eloquent words to a heart that trusts God’s ability to hear and respond. Approach Him with authenticity, knowing He values your relationship over your phrasing.
PRAYER THOUGHT:
Lean into an approach to God with authenticity, not worrying about eloquent words but focusing on your relationship with Him. May you find peace in knowing that He hears your heart and knows your needs.
