THE VISION OF VICTORY: A CALL TO ZEALOUS PURSUIT
“The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.’ After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise.” Joshua 10:8-9 (NIV)
We’ve all heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. The hare, confident in victory, becomes complacent and loses the race. How often do we do the same in our faith?Knowing that God has secured the victory, we sometimes grow lazy, losing sight of the call to persevere.
John Calvin, a 16th century theologian, captured this dynamic perfectly in his commentary of Joshua 10: “Many, while they ostentatiously express their faith, become lazy and slothful from perverse security. Joshua hears that victory is in his hand, and that he may gain it, runs swiftly to battle. For he knew that the happy issue was revealed, not for the purpose of slackening his pace or making him more remiss, but of making him exert himself with greater zeal. Hence it was that he took the enemy by surprise.”
Joshua’s certainty of God’s promise didn’t cause him to relax; instead, it fueled his zeal. His trust in God’s Word inspired an all-night march to surprise his enemies. He didn’t wait for victory to come to him—he ran toward it with unwavering faith and action.
The same is true for us. The vision of victory we have in Christ is not a call to complacency but an invitation to pursuit. It is this vision of triumph that draws our heart, soul, mind, and strength into alignment as we fix our eyes on Jesus.
Let us follow Joshua’s example. Let us embrace the wisdom of Calvin and recognize that God’s promises are not an excuse for apathy but a reason for greater zeal.
CHALLENGE:
Commit to an “all-night march” moment: Set aside dedicated time this week for an intensive focus on God—whether through fasting, extended prayer, or serving others with intention. Push past comfort to pursue God wholeheartedly.
PRAYER THOUGHT:
Ask God to show you the steps He wants you to take today. Ask for the boldness to act on His promises and the wisdom to follow His lead in faith and obedience.
