The Garden

On the Mount of Olives, in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed. He took time away from the others to be alone with the Father. He asked His friends to pray as well, but they failed and continued falling asleep. His time with the Father was right before He was betrayed by Judas and taken by the guards. 

Through His intimate moment of prayer, Christ asked God to take away the cup of betrayal, suffering, and death. But, He says to the Father, “not as I will, but as you will.” Jesus knew that no matter His suffering something bigger would soon happen. He knew that facing the cross and all He had to go through would be worth the eternal gift for all. 

Christ tasked His friends with prayer in the garden, but they continually fell asleep. You might say they were distracted and ultimately missed out on an important moment. I don’t want that to be the same for you or me. We must not allow the distractions of the world to block us from the importance of diving into God’s Word and meditating on it.  

Consider the cost Jesus made. His willingness to put aside His wants and His willingness to suffer and ultimately die, so that we might have a relationship with Him. 

How do we respond to that?
