What Does It Mean To Be Strong?
“Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous... for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9 AMPC
Have you ever faced a task so daunting that just thinking about it sent shivers down your spine? You may have wondered, What would make God think I am the one to handle this? Imagine how Joshua felt when it was his turn to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
Joshua had spent forty years in the wilderness with these people. He had heard all the murmuring and complaining. He was one of only two spies who believed that conquering the land was possible. He saw firsthand how the people treated Moses, and now it was his turn to step into leadership. What a weight to carry!
But look at how God encouraged him: “Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous... for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” God didn’t expect Joshua to summon courage on his own. He reminded Joshua that true strength comes from His presence.
The same is true for us. When God calls us to something, He doesn’t send us out unprepared or unsupported. He promises to be with us every step of the way. Biblical strength shows up when we face trials and stay rooted in God. It’s not about being tough enough—it’s about knowing Who is holding us up.
Strength in the Lord means we can keep moving forward even when we don’t feel equipped. It means courage is fueled by trust, not by self-confidence. The presence of God transforms ordinary people into strong and courageous leaders who can do extraordinary things.
Reflection Question:
What challenge are you facing right now where you need to stop relying on your own courage and instead trust God’s presence to make you strong?
