God Is Our Refuge and Fortress

“I love You, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress... my Shield, the Horn of my salvation, my High Tower.” — Psalm 18:1–2 AMPC

Where do you run when life feels overwhelming? Some people run to friends or family. Others run to food, entertainment, or even unhealthy habits for comfort. But David reminds us that true safety is only found in God.

In this psalm, David paints a powerful picture of who God is. He calls Him his Strength, Rock, Fortress, Shield, Horn of salvation, and High Tower. Each of these names tells us something about God’s character and His care for us.

  • Strength: God is the One who empowers us when we feel weak.
  • Rock: He is unshakable, a steady foundation when everything else crumbles.
  • Fortress: God is our safe place, a shelter when life’s battles close in.
  • Shield: He protects us from seen and unseen dangers.
  • Horn of salvation: A symbol of victory and power—He rescues us completely.
  • High Tower: God lifts us above the chaos so we can see from His perspective.

David had experienced danger, betrayal, and battle. Yet his response was worship: “I love You, O Lord, my Strength.” His love for God was rooted in God’s faithfulness.

Like David, we will face seasons of instability. The question is: where will we run? If we build our lives on anything other than God, it will eventually collapse. But when we make Him our Rock and Fortress, we find lasting strength and peace.

Reflection Question:
When trouble comes, what’s your first response—to run to temporary sources of comfort or to God, your Rock and Fortress?
