Steady in Every Season

DAY 17 OF 30

Correct Assumptions

A desperate father brought his son to Jesus and asked if he could heal him. Jesus responded by reassuring the man that he was fully capable of doing it. His response showed his confident trust in the power of God. He did not waver, and he reminded the man that he didn’t need to doubt either. When the father asked for help, he didn’t need to use the word “if.” There was no question as to whether or not Jesus could do what he asked.

This interaction reminds us to approach God with confidence. It reminds us that there is no need for hesitation or doubt. We can bring our questions, concerns, and needs to the Father, trusting that he has everything we need. Our understanding of him is flawed if we approach him with the expectation that he won’t answer, doesn’t care, or isn’t able to help. The truth is that God is attentive, capable, kind, and ready to intervene on behalf of his people. He loves to walk alongside us, and he loves to equip us to face whatever problems come our way.

Today, think about your own prayer life. When you pray, do your requests insinuate that Jesus can accomplish what you need? If your prayers come with a caveat, ask yourself the reason. Do you doubt that God can move in your life? Do you assume he won’t show up? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, ask God to give you a greater understanding of his power. Let him meet you in your weakness and doubt. He will respond to you with gentleness and kindness. Ask him to strengthen your faith, and he will. Ask him to remove your misconceptions, and he will.

In what areas of your life have you doubted God’s ability?
