How to deal with abandonment
The first step in addressing feelings of abandonment is to ensure that you are in right standing with God. Confess all known sins and break with them.
The second step is to confront every form of unforgiveness and pride. If you do not forgive those who have abandoned you, you resist the Holy Spirit, and God will work against you. He makes it clear that forgiveness is essential; it is foundational to the gospel. Jesus came so that people could be forgiven. In Matthew 18:34, Jesus tells a parable in which He states that those who refuse to forgive will be handed over to the torturers.
The third step is to die to yourself. Life is not about you; it is about the glory of God. Jesus explicitly states that the grain of corn must fall into the ground and die (John 15:16).
The fourth step is to carefully consider who abandoned you or the circumstances that led to your feelings of abandonment and rejection. Do not measure your worth by the actions of those who abandoned you. You are not defined by their rejection or the sins and evil behaviour of others. Additionally, what you experience as abandonment may not be abandonment at all. For instance, if you are not selected for the A-team, it may simply be because someone else is more skilled. The fact that someone else excels does not determine your value. Rejoice with those who are selected for the team; it will set you free.
There is a sixth step. You must ask the Holy Spirit to reveal every form of sin in your life and any behaviour that may lead others to reject you. Know the Word. Understand what God says about you. Learn to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God is the truth, and your emotions must never be the standard for determining what is true or false.
