Jesus: The ultimate example of abandonment
Jesus experienced total abandonment. His total abandonment is demonstrated on the Cross where He cried out, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” This moment encapsulates the depth of His abandonment.
At that moment, Jesus was forsaken by the twelve who had been with him for three years. He was abandoned by all his other disciples and followers who had eaten bread from his hand, as well as by those who had been healed and delivered from demons. The Jews and the Romans rejected him, and ultimately, he was rejected by His Father. For three hours, darkness covered the land as God hid His face, breaking the fellowship between them. For a brief moment in the eternity of time, the Son was totally abandoned.
We must understand that He was forsaken and abandoned by His Father so that we would never have to experience that forsakenness. After the cross, there is no reason to feel abandoned. In Jesus, you can have a Friend who “sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24; NIV).
Jesus died for our sins, and through His blood, we have been reconciled to the Father. Nothing can stand between you and the Father—except if you hide sin in your heart.
Jesus is the antidote for abandonment. When He ascended to heaven, He sent us the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. He will not leave us.
“(We have been) predestined to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:5-6; NKJV). Through His cross and blood, Jesus ensured that we would never experience abandonment.
When you accepted Jesus, you were given the right to be a child of God (John 1:12), and the Holy Spirit came to live in you. God, the Trinity, is omnipresent. He is everywhere. There is no inch of the universe where He is not fully present and in total control. Therefore, you can never be in a situation where God is not within you, with you, and permeating you. The only thing that can block communication between you and the Father is deliberate, unconfessed sin.
