The Gospel of Matthew

DAY 17 OF 30

Inside Matters Most

Years ago, I went in for a regular dentist appointment. As the cleaning began, the dentist commented on how white my teeth looked. I have to admit—I felt a little proud. But that feeling didn’t last long. After a closer look, she found several cavities and told me I’d need a follow-up appointment. My teeth looked great on the outside, but there were problems beneath the surface.

That moment taught me something deeper: it’s easy to appear put together externally while neglecting what’s really going on inside. The same is true in our spiritual lives. We can show up to work, appointments, or church, say the right things, and appear “clean” to others. But God sees past all of that. He looks straight at our hearts.

Jesus often challenged people who clung to outward traditions but ignored the condition of their hearts. He doesn’t want a polished performance—He wants an honest, humble connection.

The good news? He’s not just a judge of the heart—He’s also a healer of it. Today, instead of focusing on appearances, invite God to search your heart. Let Him point out what needs cleansing, and allow His grace to do the deeper work. That’s where real transformation begins.

Respond to God’s Word:

Ask God to cleanse your heart and motives.
