The Gospel of Matthew

DAY 1 OF 30

The King Has Come

When I meet someone new, the question “Where are you from?” usually comes up. Living in Florida, people assume you’re not originally from here. It’s a way to understand your story, your roots, your identity. Matthew begins his Gospel the same way—by introducing us to Jesus’ story through His genealogy.

This wasn’t just a family tree. It was proof that Jesus was the long-promised Messiah, descended from both Abraham and David, just as the Old Testament foretold. His miraculous birth fulfilled prophecy, and His arrival stirred both heaven and earth. Magi traveled from afar to worship Him. Yet, many of His own people didn’t recognize Him because they expected a political king, not a suffering Savior.

Matthew wrote to a Jewish audience to connect the dots between the Old Testament promises and the New Testament fulfillment. Jesus is not just part of history—He is the center of it. The King has come, and He reigns not from a throne made by hands, but over all creation.

Respond to God’s Word

Take a moment today to acknowledge Jesus not only as the promised Messiah but as the King of your life. What area of your heart needs to come under His rule?
