DAY 8 OF 25

THE GOD OF THE FUTURE

“I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:25; 33–34. (NIV)

Jesus had some challenging things to say about the future. How often do we find ourselves weighed down by worry, stressing about what might happen? It’s so easy for our minds to spin out of control, consumed by concerns about our work, our finances, relationships, or our health.

In the midst of this internal struggle, Jesus speaks directly to our hearts with a powerful command: Do not worry.

We’ve all probably thought, “easier said than done.” But Jesus isn’t dismissing our concerns; He’s inviting us to trust Him with the future. He calls us to trust that He will provide for our needs and that He knows exactly what we need—even before we ask.

Scientist R.M. Hirschfeld noted that, “worry can impair cognitive function, particularly decision-making and memory.” He goes on to say that excessive worry leads to mental fatigue and difficulty concentrating. In other words, worrying not only weighs us down emotionally but also clouds our ability to think clearly and act wisely.

Worry may feel beyond our control, but much of it stems from where we focus our attention. When we choose to “seek first the kingdom of God,” we begin to see our worries fade in the light of His presence. Our focus shifts from the unknowns of the future to the unshakeable promises of our faithful God.

So, today, take a moment to ask yourself: What are you seeking? Where is your focus? Is it on the uncertainty of the future, or on the steady, faithful hand of God?

CHALLENGE:

Take a moment to write down your worries in a journal. Then, next to each worry, write a prayer asking God to take those concerns and provide for your needs. This practice helps you release control and trust Him.

PRAYER THOUGHT:

Take a moment to bring your worries before God. Acknowledge the concerns that are weighing on your heart and thank Him for His faithfulness in the past. Surrender your uncertainties to Him and invite His peace to fill your heart as you seek His kingdom first.
