It's safe to say most of us have experienced that moment when someone over-promises but under-delivers. Maybe it was a Christmas present you had your hopes up for but didn’t get, someone not coming to your play, or even a disappointing season when your favorite team was hyped-up to win the championship. We can still remember the disappointment and maybe even the sadness that came with it. It is a normal thing for you to feel let down, disappointed, and even angry. It’s easy to lose trust in people when they let us down, too.
In today's reading, Jesus teaches his disciples how to lead differently to avoid letting others down. Jesus shows us that leadership is not about being in charge and having power over others, but about showing up for them.
When we over-promise and under-deliver, we are putting our own interests above others. We may be seeking to gain approval, to look good, or to get ahead. In doing so, we are not serving others, and we are not being the leaders we have the potential to be.
We can strive to be leaders in our schools, in our homes, and in our communities. We can look for ways to serve others, to put their needs first, and to be humble and compassionate in our interactions with them.
