Long Awaited: Prophecies of the Savior's Birth

DAY 6 OF 10

CALLED OUT OF EGYPT

GOD CALLED THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT | HOSEA 11:1

In Exodus 13-14 the Israelites found themselves trapped against the Red Sea as they escaped from slavery in Egypt. Moses cried out to God for help, and God instructed him to stretch out his hand over the sea. God sent a powerful wind and miraculously parted the waters, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground. The Egyptians attempted to follow, but God closed the waters, washing the Egyptians away.

God referred to Israel as His beloved son, a people whom He guided and protected. The prophet Hosea wrote in Hosea 11:1, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Just as God saved the people of Israel, He would later save Jesus by calling Him from Egypt, underscoring the prophetic connection between Israel’s history and the life of Jesus.

JESUS FLED FROM EGYPT | MATTHEW 2:13-15

After observing a bright star, a group of wise men—likely astrologers or interpreters of dreams—arrived in Jerusalem and went to King Herod. They believed that the star signified the birth of a great king and asked Herod where to find the “King of the Jews.”

The star led the wise men to Bethlehem, where they found Jesus. Overjoyed, they worshipped Jesus and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

In Isaiah 60:3, it is written, “Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” The arrival of the wise men reflected Jesus’ influence beyond Israel, showing His impact as Savior of the whole world.

Before leaving, the wise men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, so they departed by another route. Shortly after, an angel appeared to Joseph, instructing him to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt for safety because Herod sought to kill Jesus. This journey fulfilled the prophecy of Hosea 11:1, where God declared, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Just as Egypt served as a place of provision for the Israelites, God also used it as a place of refuge for Jesus.

This Christmas, be mindful of the meaningful locations mentioned throughout Scripture, including Egypt, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem.
