Long Awaited: Prophecies of the Savior's Birth

DAY 5 OF 10

DEDICATED IN THE TEMPLE

RITUAL LAWS + SACRIFICES SURROUNDING CHILDBIRTH | LEVITICUS 12:1-8

In the book of Leviticus, God provided Moses with the Old Testament Law—detailed instructions for the Israelites to remain set apart as God’s people. Within these laws, God gave Moses specific guidelines regarding cleanliness and the sacrificial rituals surrounding childbirth.

After a child was born, the new parents were instructed to provide a sacrifice within the temple. If they were unable to afford a lamb as their offering, they could provide two birds as their sacrifice. This provision highlights God’s desire for everyone to participate, regardless of wealth or status.

The law also mandated that male children be circumcised on the eighth day after birth. This practice originated with Abraham as an outward sign of the covenant between God and the Israelites. Moses reaffirmed this tradition with the Law, and it remains a Jewish practice to this day.

MARY + JOSEPH’S OBEDIENCE TO THE JEWISH LAW | LUKE 2:22-39

When Jesus was eight days old, He was circumcised, fulfilling the command that God gave to Abraham in Genesis 17. Jesus was presented at the temple in Jerusalem, where Mary and Joseph offered a sacrifice, following the laws around childbirth. Because Mary and Joseph were not wealthy enough to provide a lamb, they offered two doves as a humble sacrifice, highlighting God’s provision for those of all backgrounds to participate in worship.

At the temple, a man named Simeon, led by the Holy Spirit, recognized Jesus as the promised Savior. Filled with awe, Simeon prophesied that although Jesus would be rejected by many and face great pain, He would offer hope and salvation to those who believe.

Anna, an elderly widow who served as a prophetess in the temple, also recognized Jesus as the Savior of Israel. Even as a small child, Jesus was acknowledged for His divinity!

This Christmas, admire how Jesus and His family remained faithful to the Jewish law and followed the customs of the Old Testament.
