30 Days With the Psalms

DAY 6 OF 30

Asking for forgiveness

“O LORD, rebuke me not in Your anger, nor discipline me in Your wrath. Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled" (Psalm 6:1-2 ESV).

This Psalm was written from a life-threatening situation. And it seems to be caused by God’s anger, as we see in verse 1. The author of this Psalm sees a relationship between some particular sin he has committed and his present difficult situation. This sin has damaged his relationship with God, and it urgently needs to be repaired. Otherwise, he won’t even survive!

The only solution in such a situation is to cry out for God’s grace: “Save me for the sake of Your steadfast love” (Psalm 6:4 ESV). The only ground for hope and healing is God’s unchanging love for sinners. And the Lord is willing to hear such cries for mercy. Verse 9 (ESV) tells us: “The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer.”

Do you have this same experience? When you did something wrong, do you turn to God to repent and ask for forgiveness? That is the only way to restore you relationship with God and to experience His blessing again!
