A cry for justice

“Do not drag me off with the wicked,
with the workers of evil,
who speak peace with their neighbors
while evil is in their hearts.
Give to them according to their work
and according to the evil of their deeds” (Psalm 28:3-4 ESV).

David's situation is not looking good. He urgently needs God's help. “If you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit,” he complains (Psalm 28:1 ESV). David is at the end of his strength. Without God's help, he is doomed. David's problems have to do with “the wicked” who speak peace with their friends, but in the meantime do injustice to others.

David cannot stand up to such people. Nor does he want to take revenge personally. He asks God to repay them for their evil deeds. Some verses later, he looks back with gratitude: “Blessed be the LORD! For He has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy” (Psalm 28:6 ESV).

David is certainly not the only one who has to deal with unjust, malicious people. Perhaps you know some too. How do you deal with such situations? Could you follow David's example and ask the Lord God to repay evil? You could even recite the closing words of this psalm in your prayer: “Oh, save Your people and bless Your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever” (Psalm 28:9 ESV).
