Courage Under Stress

Jour 6 sur 7

The Stressful Thorns of the Flesh Sometimes God chooses to heal us or remove our burden, but he may also choose to work in and through our weaknesses and suffering to reveal his strength. The idea of finding pleasure in weakness is a foreign concept to human beings in most cultures. Weakness is something to be despised. Weakness is not a goal to strive toward. However, Paul talks about boasting in his weakness, a “thorn in [his] flesh” that caused him ongoing suffering for many years. While he never identified the condition explicitly, it was serious enough for him to plead with God for healing numerous times—all to no avail. In the end, Paul came to believe that God’s power was at work even in his weakness. We’ve all known friends who have suffered with cancer, chronic pain, mental illness, addiction, or a terminal diagnosis. These conditions weaken a person’s body and mind. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, rehab, and physical therapy take their toll on emotions and self-esteem. How can anyone boast in his or her pain and weakness, especially when answers are limited and the future seems uncertain? When loved ones and friends are at their lowest, we can be strong for them. Our caring support and shared courage can allow God’s power to shine on that person. Never underestimate the power of a listening ear or a good cry with a friend! No one should go through a night of suffering alone after a grueling day of chemotherapy. God demonstrates his peace and power through his followers who live out the example of biblical heroes of the faith. Have you ever noticed how children put Sunday school stories into action? They don’t hesitate to pray for their grandparents who are sick. Their tender innocence radiates their faith in God even in the presence of suffering. They watch God comforting those they love and often accept it as a natural part of life. Is it any wonder that Jesus encourages all of us to have childlike faith (Matthew 18:3)? Lord, help us truly believe that your power is working in our weakness. We cling to the truth that you are strong and will walk with us each step of this difficult journey.
