One Body, Different Parts: Devotions From Time Of GraceExemple

Comm-union
Would you think I was creepy if I told you that I like to watch people during Communion? Okay, I know that sounds slightly stalkerish, but I do. And I have no plans to stop.
Because the people that come forward during Communion are so different. Tall and short. Black and white. Male and female. Young and old. Introverts and extroverts. Musicians and accountants. The cautious and the risk-takers. The routine lovers and the free spirits. The big, confident personalities and the big, compassionate hearts.
Yet they all come to Communion for the same reason: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And they all come to Communion eager for the same gift: “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28). They all leave with the same Spirit on the same mission for the same purpose. Same bread, same wine, same body, same blood, same God, same grace.
There they stand side by side, these radically different people. And I watch them. I marvel at the artistry of our Creator, who loves different shapes and sizes and colors. As they return to their seats, I cannot help but smile. Because I realize why they call it Comm-union.
