Sermon Series: Teach us to Pray
Sermon title: Fasting and Prayer
The goal today is not to shame you about fasting after you just feasted for days with your family!!
God threw 7 parties a year! He knows how to feast, but at the same time we see many times throughout the bible where the people of God would fast from food for a period of time.
What is fast?

Simply put, a biblical fast is abstaining from food and giving yourself to prayer and time with God.
Do I have to fast?.....

Its this logic on spiritual disciplines that keep us from intimacy and maturing in our walk with God.

Should I Fast?
When you fast.......

Fasting should be a regular spiritual discipline of the believer.
A promise for you today.
1.Fasting produces Desperation for the things of God and the heart of God.

In the christian life it's too easy especially in the western church to become comfortable and lazy in our pursuit of God…. we all can do this.

Fasting gets us to a desperate place realizing our immense need of God every day.

Desperate people call upon God!!
Esther called the nation to a fast when they were in danger from destruction and God answered their cry!
2. Fasting produces Discipline for conquering sin.

Fasting Food is literally telling your flesh that it's not in charge.

It puts the flesh under submission to your will.
3.Fasting provides direction from God.

Daniel fasted for 21 days and God answered with revelation about Israel's future.
Some of you are waiting on an answer from God that could be on the other side of a fast. some breakthrough could be on the other side of a fast.
4. Fasting produces dependence on God.

God never wants you to become independent of him.
God never wants us to move from a place of total dependence on him and fasting can help get us back to that place.

When you haven't eaten and you're struggling to work or do anything you reach out to him and realize you need him more than anything.
Fasting produces physically what is happening spiritually when we become comfortable and complacent.
I want to invite you to start to seek God with Fasting and Prayer.
we're starting a 21 day fast on January 1st.

Also, I want to invite you to fast for our prayer nights.

Let's set our faces to heaven and believe God to transform outlives, our families and our cities.
