Gerald Ratner is a businessman who helped his family’s jewellery business grow significantly in the 1980s. At the height of his success, he commented in a speech that his products were “total crap” and that one of the sets of earrings they sold was “cheaper than a prawn sandwich”. After his speech, the value of his company dropped by £500 million bringing it to the verge of collapsing.
Words, once said, cannot be unsaid. Proverbs 12:18 (NIV) reminds us: “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Scripture is clear: our words carry power. James 3:5-6 compares the tongue to a spark that can set a forest ablaze. A careless comment can wound deeply, while a word of encouragement can lift someone out of despair. Proverbs 15:4 (NIV) adds, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life.” Healing doesn’t always come from grand gestures—it often begins with gracious speech.
What drives our words? Proverbs 12:20 (NIV) points to the heart: “Those who promote peace have joy.” Our lips follow the posture of our hearts. Jesus said in Luke 6:45 (NIV), “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” If we want our speech to heal, we must cultivate a heart shaped by Christ.
Today, ponder this: Before speaking or posting online, pause and ask: “Will these words wound, or will they heal?” Ask God for a wise tongue and a peace-loving heart. Aim to speak one word of encouragement today to someone who needs it—your kindness might be the balm their heart’s been waiting for.
