Nearness

DAY 16 OF 62

We live in a world that constantly encourages us to plan. From university degrees and career paths to retirement plans, from holiday itineraries to long-term goals, planning is ingrained in our daily lives. Our passage today speaks directly to this human inclination, offering a profound, liberating perspective. Proverbs 16:3 (ESV) says to "commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established," and Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) reminds us that "the heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

These verses reveal a beautiful partnership between our efforts and the Lord’s sovereignty. We are called to be diligent, to think, to pray, and to lay out our plans. However, our passage today reminds us that our planning isn't the final word. The ultimate outcome, the "establishing" of our plans and "steps," rests firmly in God's hands.

So what does this mean for us practically? It means we can plan with enthusiasm, researching options, and working hard. But as we do this, we are to "commit" everything to the Lord. This commitment isn't a passive act; it's an active surrender. It means praying over our plans, seeking His wisdom through His Word, and being open to His redirection.

Perhaps a job opportunity didn't pan out, or a project took an unexpected turn. In those moments, it's easy to feel frustrated or defeated. This is precisely when Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) offers comfort: "the Lord establishes their steps." Even when our plans seem derailed, God is still at work, guiding our path in ways we might not yet comprehend.

Today, ponder this: Is there an area of your life that you are trying to control completely: the plan, the steps, or the outcomes? Prayerfully commit that specific plan or outcome to the Lord, trusting that He will establish your steps.
