Nearness

DAY 14 OF 62

In his book, Rediscovering Holiness, JI Packer wrote, “the divine agenda for the rest of my life is therefore sanctification.” Sanctification is the lifelong process of a Christian becoming more like Christ. Could it be that the more a believer abides in Christ, the more their words and actions begin to reflect Christ?

Today's passage speaks to self control. It takes self control to speak softly during an argument. The wisdom from this section of Proverbs is not suggesting we remain silent when faced with conflict; rather, that our responses require careful consideration in order to resolve issues peacefully. A gentle word can defuse tension. A well-chosen word can help someone to flourish and grow. It all requires self control to do! But the real question is not whether one should have self control in their conversations—the question is how.

Thankfully, self control is a fruit of the Spirit! As we abide in Christ (John 15), the Holy Spirit at work in our hearts, produces a character in us that is Christ-like. It’s not fruit we can grow ourselves. It’s fruit only the work of the Holy Spirit can produce, so that only God gets the glory!

Today, ponder this: Sanctification is a lifelong process. Reflect on your life over the last few weeks, months or years. How have you seen God growing the fruits of His Spirit in your life?
