The Heart WorkSample

Day 3 — A Hard Heart
A hard heart isn’t always loud or rebellious - sometimes it’s just weary. It’s what happens when disappointment, betrayal, or fear slowly build walls around the most tender parts of your life. Over time, those walls turn to stone. You stop expecting, stop feeling deeply, and stop listening for God’s voice. A hard heart may still go through the motions of faith, but it’s no longer moved by His presence. That’s why Jesus asked His disciples in Mark 8:17, “Are your hearts hardened?"(NLT). This wasn't to shame them, but to awaken them. Even people walking closely with Him can become desensitized when pain, pride, or unbelief creep in unnoticed.
In Ezekiel 11:19, He promises, “I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh”(ESV). A heart of flesh isn’t weak - it’s alive! It feels, responds, and stays tender toward the Spirit. When the heart becomes hard, it stops receiving the life of God. His words may reach your ears, but they no longer penetrate your inner being. The danger of a hardened heart is not that God stops speaking - it’s that we stop hearing.
The good news is that God specializes in heart transplants. He doesn’t patch the old heart; He replaces it. His Spirit is the one who breaks through the stone, restoring sensitivity, hope, and love where numbness once ruled. Sometimes that softening begins with repentance, other times with tears, or even in stillness as He gently reawakens what you thought was gone. As His presence begins to move again, walls start to crumble and life begins to flow.
Reflection: The question isn’t if you have a hard heart. But rather: Are you aware of the hard part(s) within your heart? Are you bringing it to Jesus? He doesn’t condemn you for having a guarded heart; He invites you into healing. Ask Him to make your heart tender again, to help you feel what He feels and love as He loves. When your heart turns back to flesh, you’ll notice the change immediately. Joy returns, peace increases, and your spirit becomes responsive to His whispers again. A soft heart is where intimacy and revelation begin. It’s where Heaven finds a home on earth.
