The Bible Made Simple [Overview]

DAY 3 OF 6

In this reading plan, you get to know the Big Picture of the Bible.

This Big Picture can be described like this:
The Bible reveals God’s plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ.

Yesterday, we saw how the problem began.

Today, we’re going to look at the next step of that Big Picture: the uncovering of the problem.

So, what was the problem again? It’s our rebellion against God—our sins.

It’s our sins that disconnected us from God.

“It’s your sins that [disconnected] you from God.” (Isaiah 59:2 NLT)

And because God is the source of life, being disconnected from Him meant death for us.

In order to be saved from death and reconnected with God, humans had to be saved from their sins.

So, in order for humans to realize their sin problem, God gave the Law with the 10 Commandments.

How does the Law work?

The Law works like a mirror.

A mirror can’t clean your face; it can only show how dirty you are.

The Law can’t make you obedient; it can only show how disobedient you are.

The Law gives us God’s perfect standard for obedience: love God, don’t lie, don’t steal, etc.

And by this, show us that we fail to follow it.

The Law uncovers: all humans are rebels, full of sins.

“The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” (Romans 3:20)

You see this rebellion again and again in the first part of the Bible—the Old Testament.

Page after page, story after story, we see humans ignoring God, breaking His Law, stealing, lying, and killing.

All these stories show one thing very clearly: we have a big problem.

And seeing this is vital—otherwise, we won’t see how much we need the solution.

That’s why the Law is important. But it was never meant to fix the problem.

It was meant to lead us to the point where we finally say:
“I’m a rebel and need help.”

Tomorrow, we’ll see God’s solution to our problem.

For now, you can read the 10 Commandments that are a part of the Law God gave. Through these 10 Commandments, you can test yourself: Do you fall short of God’s standard?

Application:

When you look at God's commandments,
👉 where do you notice areas in your life that fall short?

Prayer:

God,
I realize now that I often minimize my sin or compare myself to others to feel better.
But Your Law shows me what’s really in my heart.
I see now that I can’t fix myself—I need help.
Thank You for using the Law to open my eyes.

Amen.
