After that brief aside, the writer returns to the comparison between Melchizedek and Jesus. Using an argument that might feel unusual to us, he shows that Jesus existed before all time and stands above the law and those who uphold and carry it out—the priests and Levites. The Levites were responsible for the temple service and for guiding the people in the ritual requirements of the law. But Jesus is far above all of that. He is the ultimate and eternal priest, carrying out His priestly work forever. His one-time sacrifice on the cross is sufficient—for all time.
Reflection
Jesus’ sacrifice is enough. No matter how great your guilt.
