A farmer knows what he has sown, but he also knows that if the hard work of sowing isn’t done, there will be nothing to reap. And while a farmer may know what seeds he planted, the outcome is never fully known until the harvest, at “the proper time.”

And there’s the challenge: God does not tell us when the reaping will happen – or even if we will be the ones to see it. Our job is to sow faithfully.

In time, everyone might see the bold, beautiful flowers as they bloom. But the flowers don’t appear if the seeds are left in the cupboard – they must be planted. This is Paul’s call: simply to sow. The outcome is not our responsibility, but the sowing is.

Perhaps you are a parent, a foster carer, or a supported lodgings host. Perhaps you are serving a family in need, making sure they don’t feel alone. Perhaps you are quietly sowing God’s love into someone else’s life.

Paul’s reminder to us is: keep going. Keep sowing, even if you are weary with it. The harvest will come, even if you don’t see it right now. Even when there is no visible change, trust that the time will come.

Prayer

As you peel apples, chop vegetables, or prepare a meal, take a moment to pray for children and young people in care.

Pray they would know God’s provision in their lives, and that supportive people would be placed around them to help them grow and flourish.

Pray for parents and carers who are weary and struggling. Pray that God would uplift and strengthen them.

Pray for all of those sowing different seeds right now, that God would bring the harvest, in his perfect timing.
