Noah & The Ark
Book of Genesis
~Before Noah’s generation, the descendants of Adam and Eve became increasingly depraved.
When God destroyed a wicked generation with a worldwide flood, He spared Noah, his family, and select animals in an acacia wood ark built according to His exact instructions. The flood raged for forty days. The fountains of the deep broke open, and the firmament collapsed with rain. At last, the waters receded, and the ark came to rest upon the mountains of Ararat. From this place of new beginnings, Noah and his family stepped onto dry ground, beholding a cleansed earth. A rainbow in the sky signified God’s covenant with humanity to never destroy the earth with a flood again. Noah built an altar and worshipped God.
~After the flood, the unified peoples of the earth built a tower, reaching towards heaven, but when God saw that nothing would be impossible to them, He confused their language and scattered them.
Significance
- Because of His perfect and complete holiness and love, God is the only one who has the right to judge—He is the Righteous Judge. We should all understand and tremble. (2 Pet. 2:5, Mat. 24:37-39)
- The God who declares the future and provides wisdom for our present is the same God who takes us by the hand and makes us His overcomers to our joy and His glory.
- The ark, God’s means of saving Noah and his family, foreshadowed our baptism into Christ, our Ark of salvation. (1 Pet. 3:19–22)
- The rainbow covenant reminds us of God’s mercy and faithfulness to keep His promises in our family as He did with Noah’s.
- Though the world around him was filled with violence and evil, Noah “walked faithfully with God” (Gen. 6:9). His example shows us that it’s possible to live faithfully in a faithless culture.
