How to Make Disciples That Make Disciples

DAY 5 OF 7

Day 5: Scripture

Devotional

Jesus didn’t just know Scripture - he breathed it. Whether he was teaching crowds, challenging Pharisees, or talking one-on-one, His words echoed the ancient words spoken long before him.

When he was tempted in the desert, he didn’t argue or explain. He simply said, “It is written.” When he comforted, called, corrected, or healed, the Word of God naturally came to the surface.

As a discipler, your role isn’t to run a Bible study. You’re not a teacher delivering content. You’re a companion pointing someone to Jesus - and the Bible is one of the best ways to do that. But that doesn’t mean you have to know everything or quote verses from memory. It just means you stay rooted in God’s Word yourself.

Ask the disciple what they’ve been reading. Share what’s been stirring in your own quiet times. If they’re facing a decision, a fear, or a question, what the Bible might speak into that? You don’t need a curriculum - but you do need a high view of Scripture and a willingness to bring it into real conversations.

When the Bible shapes your own life, it will naturally shape your discipling relationships. The goal isn’t to “impart knowledge.” The goal is to help them be discipled by the Word, to engage with the Bible personally, wrestle with it, and let it transform them.

Today, reflect on your own relationship with the Bible. Is it close? Distant? Mechanical? Life-giving? Do you need to grow in your love for Scripture? And how might you help someone else love the Word as a living voice from God, not just a book?

Reflection Questions

  • How has Scripture shaped your journey with Jesus?
  • Are you comfortable bringing the Bible into conversation? Why or why not?
  • How can you help someone else grow in their love for the Word?

Prayer for them

Jesus, give [name] a hunger for Your Word. Help them encounter You through Scripture and learn to hear Your voice clearly. Amen.

Prayer for me

Lord, keep me deeply rooted in Your Word. Let it shape the way I think, speak, and disciple. Teach me how to share Scripture naturally and helpfully. Amen.
