How to Make Disciples That Make Disciples

DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1: You and Them

Devotional

Who has made the biggest difference in your walk with Jesus?

For me, one of these people was a man named Nick. I met him in my first week at university and he asked if he could take me for lunch and encourage me in my faith. We met almost every week for a year. He didn’t have all the answers, but he showed up, week after week, asked good questions, paid attention, and helped me keep Jesus as my vision. Looking back, I realise that he was discipling me.

This is the call for all of us as followers of Jesus. He tells us to “go and make disciples of all nations.” Often though, we let this calling slip. But it is crucial to building the kingdom and the church is growing fastest in the places where this is happening.

At the heart of discipleship is a relational invitation: “Come, follow me, as I follow Jesus.” Discipleship is not about being the expert, but about being available. It’s about offering someone else the space to journey deeper in their walk with Jesus.

Take a moment to reflect on your own story. Who invested in you? Who walked with you through the highs and the lows? And now, who could you be that person for?

The call to make disciples isn’t just for Christian leaders. It’s for the whole church. It’s for you. Not once you’ve figured it all out, but today, just as you are. You don’t need to be perfect to be present. You don’t need to have all the answers to be available. Discipleship starts with you, and it starts with them. And it’s someone you probably already know.

You might already have someone in mind. Maybe it’s the person you prayed for last week, or someone who keeps popping up in conversation. This devotional series will help you get ready to invite them into a discipling relationship. But for today, take a minute to reflect on your own story and ask God to reveal who He might be inviting you to walk alongside. Feel free to pray for this person by name across this plan, and at the end of each day, you’ll pray a short prayer for them as the potential disciple, and you as the discipler.

Reflection Questions

  • Who has had the greatest impact on your faith journey? Why?
  • If someone were to say you made a difference in their walk with Jesus, what would you hope they say?
  • Who in your life might God be nudging you to disciple?

Prayer for them

Jesus, I lift up [name] before You. Show me who they are and how You see them. I ask that you begin to prepare their heart. Inspire in them a desire to grow. Amen.

Prayer for me

Lord, thank You for inviting me into this walk. I’m not perfect, but I’m willing. Help me be present, attentive, and full of grace as I begin this journey. Speak clearly and give me courage. Amen.
