DAY 8 OF 10

Conversations Across Cultures

Jesus was no stranger to cultural tension. Again and again, we see Him step into spaces others avoided—crossing religious, ethnic, gender, and social boundaries to engage people with compassion and truth.

One of the most powerful examples is His conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). Culturally, she was an outsider—an ethnic minority, a woman with a painful past, and a member of a community viewed with suspicion by Jesus’ people. And yet Jesus doesn’t avoid her. He speaks to her directly, asks for a drink, and opens the door to deep spiritual conversation.

What’s striking is how He enters the conversation: not with condemnation or assumptions, but with curiosity, presence, and purpose. He listens. He names her story with tenderness. He offers her living water. And the result? Her life is transformed—and through her, an entire community is changed.

Jesus wasn’t just good at teaching truth—He was masterful in how He connected with people who were different from Him. He honored their humanity. He asked good questions. He stayed present even in discomfort. He knew that every person, regardless of background or identity, was made in the image of God and worth engaging.

In our world today, divided by language, history, and culture, we need this same Spirit-led approach. True gospel conversations don’t avoid difference—they enter it with humility and grace. And through those conversations, healing begins.

You may not find yourself at a well in Samaria, but you likely will find yourself face-to-face with someone who sees the world differently than you do. The question is: will you walk around them, or toward them? Will you speak with judgment, or curiosity? Will your words build bridges or reinforce walls?

Prayer: Jesus, You crossed every boundary to reach us. Teach me to do the same. Help me listen well, speak wisely, and love others across every dividing line.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Learning from Jesus: How does Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman challenge your view of cross-cultural relationships?
  2. Crossing the Lines: Where might God be inviting you to cross a line of comfort in order to connect?

About this Plan

Conversations

Conversations is a 10-day devotional exploring the spiritual power of words and the sacred gift of dialogue. From prayer to cross-cultural relationships, from encouragement to evangelism, this journey invites you to speak with intentionality, humility, and love. Rooted in the example of Jesus and anchored in Scripture, each day reflects on how conversations—with God, with others, and even with those far from faith—can become holy ground. Through daily reflections, prayers, and questions, you’ll learn to listen more deeply, speak more truthfully, and live more prayerfully. You were made for conversation, and your words can create worlds.
