Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 59 OF 365

Immutability We've been blessed to look at a few of God's attributes this month. We've beheld how He's self-existent, how He's one, how He's triune, how He's eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, loving, merciful, gracious, forgiving, joyful, sovereign, vulnerable, etc... And the more we've seen, the more and more wonderful God has grown in our eyes. And yet, because we live in a world where we're constantly being assailed by change, it's possible for us to still whisper to ourselves, "As wonderful as God is today, what if He changes tomorrow? What if He's somehow different down the road?" That's a natural question because change is the one constant we're used to dealing with. It's for this very reason that we saved the attribute of immutability for last. Immutability means incapable of change, or unchanging, and it's just as much a part of who God is as any of the other attributes we've learned about. Get this: God does not change and never will! Who He is right now is Who He will be for all eternity. His love, His grace, His mindfulness, His responsiveness, His patience, His righteousness, His holiness, His knowability, His faithfulness, His creativity, His humor...none of it is ever going anywhere. It will always and ever be Who He is! That's great news for us who live in a day and age where change is so often exhausting and frustrating. No sooner do we get settled than everything gets shaken up again. What a blessing it is to know that no matter what, we can settle down and be comforted by who God is. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. (James 1:17 NKJV) God does not change and never will! Who He is right now is Who He will be for all eternity. What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
