Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 264 OF 365

Consider your conditions God employs many different tools in making His will known to us, and one that we can't fail to mention is circumstances. Webster defines circumstances as "the existing conditions or state of affairs surrounding and affecting an agent." In other words, circumstances are the things that come along and happen to us in life...and they can be used to shed light on God's will. For example, it was God's will for Jeremiah to purchase a specific plot of land. But notice that although the Lord had an open channel of communication with the Prophet, He didn't just say, "I want you to buy this." Instead, He told Jeremiah that Hanamel, his uncle's son, would come up to him and ask him to buy it. Watch what happened: "Then Hanamel my uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said to me, 'Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. (Jeremiah 32:8 NKJV) Do you see the role that circumstances played in confirming God's will? Something independent and outside of Jeremiah's control happened. Hanamel came up to him and offered to sell him the land. And when this happened, Jeremiah was assured in God's will. Circumstances shouldn't be the first or only thing we factor in when trying to determine God's will. But at the same time, we're wise to stop and consider the conditions around us. They may be confirming what the Lord wants for us. God employs many different tools in making His will known to us, and one that we can't fail to mention is circumstances. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
