“Shelter”
Notes From Jessica Jones About the Painting:
In this devotion series we combine Art with Bible reading. We would encourage you as the reader to mediate on the art as you do the verses. Art has a way of stirring up questions, depth of meaning, and interpretative elements about Biblical texts that often go overlooked.
In our culture, we are so overwhelmed by images each and everyday. We’ve lost the ability to understand the gift God gives us through the artist. Artists can make “visible the invisible,” and help us tangibly contemplate Faith (the evidence of things unseen).
Use the artist’s notes below to help you interpret the passage as well as the painting. We pray this study helps you grow in your maturity as a disciple of Christ, but also in your ability to enjoy, revel in, and feast your senses on all of God’s creation—His artwork!
1. The Winged form represents that; “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”
2. The Purple and Blue shadow portrays resting in the Almighty’s shadow.
3. The Golden path leading to color outbursts shows the salvation God displays to his people.
4. Since the wings represent God’s protection, I included various colors to reflect different attributes of God and works of God:
- Blues and Purples: royalty and sovereignty
- Yellow: righteousness, glory, and the light/salvation
- Green: new life of those saved by God
5. The dark area above the wings is reminiscent of battle field: “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.”
6. The arrows flying: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,”
